Thanks Kevin, and I do remember our brief meeting at Hardly Strictly, a fun day! Glad things resonated and that you have had the opportunity to enjoy the particular blissful and deep suffering of a real relationship over much time! What's the best Dead love song?
I guess I can't count right. Ha! Love makes the brain fuzzy. Actually thought it was 25 for a minute. It will be our 20 year wedding anniversary...and 28 years together...! Best Dead love song? That's tough. I'm tempted to say "Stella Blue" (laughing crying emoji), Althea comes to mind...but I'm gonna go with "Scarlet Begonias"
Thanks for commenting. One of the unexpected rewards from posting this piece is getting all these responses from long-term married couples, which has been amazing. It makes me realize that while the culture (pretends to) celebrates long term relationships and marriage, there arent that many places for the hard and rewarding work of long term connection to be celebrated or even discussed much. So glad to get a sliver of your story!
YES! Thanks for this sweet essay on love. My wife and I will be at 25 too in the summer. Glad I got to shake your hand and you saw me and her on the hill at the recent Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. Not sure if you'll remember. She said "did you see all the eyes on his shirt?" and I was like "No somehow I missed that!" I was looking in your eyes I guess. So much of this rings true especially the part about death and love. Things to look forward to, good times! :) All life is suffering the buddha said, and love too. But I feel very lucky. To Long lasting love! And I even gave magnetic fields a try, really creative! not sure how I missed them in the 90s. The Dead are still my soundtrack. Always look forward to your writing Erik! -Kevin
Ah man, this is so beautiful! I can totally relate. My wife and I just celebrated our 17th anniversary and met when I joined a friend on an ecstasy-fueled weekend at the last minute. I joined my wife’s band when she was still married, so our attraction simmered for a while until it could no longer be contained. I love you draw on a pop culture artifact for guidance in love and marriage. So Davisian. Thanks for sharing brother.
Awwww. Its the season for sweetie bombs, or, better yet, bon bons.
